Protect your phone conversations with a phone scrambler

January 18th, 2010

Why a phone scrambler? The Threat…

If someone is actively targeting you, attempting to gather information or whatever purpose, it is almost guaranteed that your cordless and cellular telephone conversations are being listened to using some type of ‘ spy equipment ‘.

And it is likely that there will be an effort to tap your hard-wired telephone as well – (more on that in a bit).

If you are using a digital cordless phone with spread spectrum technology, you can be fairly confident that the signal between the handset and the base isn’t being monitored.

However…

Once your cordless phone sends a signal from the base down the telephone line, you no longer have a digital spread spectrum signal.

The Solution With this in mind, you may wish to install a phone scrambler, on your line to secure your sensitive cordless and regular phone conversations. Doing so will prevent any casual listener from monitoring your conversations.

And depending on what type of telephone voice scrambler you use, it may prevent even Big Brother from making sense of youre telephone calls.

Once available only to the military an government agencies, the very best units (such as the STU-III), costing just a few thousand dollars each, are available to the commercial market.

Phone scramblers may be divided into the following broad categories:

Frequency Inversion The simplest form of scrambling – it inverts the high and low points in the signal.

If you are simpy trying to keep someone from listening in on your conversation on an extension, this type of phone scrambler will work but anyone who puts any effort into defeating the frequency inversion will have little trouble doing so.

Rolling Code This one takes frequency inversion and add an additional function so that the pivot point around which the frequency is scrambled is continuously changing.

This makes decoding of the signal much more difficult.

By using a rolling-code phone scrambler you will secure your conversations against any casual listeners, criminal eavesdroppers, and local investigators and law enforcement agencies.

These units are in about the same price range as the basic frequency-inversion ones.

Digital Encryption Digital scramblers are the most secure and the most expensive. These units are used by the military and government agencies – and they start selling for 1500$ +.

If you are concerned about having your phone calls intercepted by government agencies or are afraid of industrial espionage, digital encryption is the answer.

But for most of us the sensitivity of our conversations does not require this level of security and the associated expense.

Please Remember…

It is important to remember that you must have a phone scrambler on each end of the conversation – and that scrambling your voice on the telephone line does not defeat an eletronic listening device that is placed to intercept room audio.

I’m A Romance Novel Hero!

January 11th, 2010

Before we get started here, let me tell y’all that what you’re about to read is the absolute truth. The absolute, unvarnished truth. I swear it on every one of my Elvis and BTO CDs. Now, let’s get right down to it, y’all just focus your eyes on the following sentence:

I was the inspiration for the male lead in a published romance novel.

Okay, okay, scoff all y’all want. I’m not shooting the bull here, I’m shooting just as straight as Annie Oakley. And before I give out the name of this book, I need to tell y’all a little about its author and how it all came about.

Trish Jensen is the author of the book in question. Those of you who read romantic fiction might know her name, as she’s the author of several highly popular romance novels, her two latest being “Stuck With You,” and “Against His Will.” Let me also add that Trish (www.trishjensen.com) publishes with Leisure Books, a large New York based publishing house. So Trish is a major league romance author, she’s the real deal, a veritable BTO of publishing acumen, and she also happens to be a wonderful judge of character, if I do say so myself.

Trish and I met out in cyberspace several years ago because we both frequented a popular writer’s online group at that time. She writes humor, and I try to, so we became friends. I give Trish a whole lot of credit, she gave me lots of encouragement when I first began writing, and I credit a lot of whatever has happened since directly to her. Friends like her don’t just come along everyday, and I’m very proud of her and her accomplishments.

Now, in order to fully disclose, I feel that I need to tell y’all something else about Trish – she’s a yankee. Yep, I know some of y’all may be in shock over this, and I fully understand, but she’s still a good person. The best thing about Trish is that she realizes that the true utopia of the United States is right here in the South, and on account of that just about all of her books are set here. She’s so good at writing about us that I sometimes wonder if she’s being totally truthful about never having lived here. There’s some Southern blood somewhere in this girl, for sure.

Now, about the book. A few years ago, when Trish was just starting out, she wrote a romance novel called “Send Me No Flowers.” She even had to use her maiden name, Trish Graves, on the book’s cover because of some kind of contractual thing regarding her name with another publisher. Anyway, Trish starts writing this book, and the lead male character happens to be a South Carolina sheriff who’s honest, good looking, and who has women falling all over him. She named this character Rob Townsend. And when Trish considered all of his qualities, she felt that there was only one true role model for Rob, only one living person out there who could fully capture his essence, and that was moi. Me. So the book got written, and you can get on the internet and probably find a copy out there somewhere if you look really, really hard. And if y’all still don’t want to believe me, just take a gander at the dedication to the book after you get your hands on one. Read it closely. Ahem. Case closed.

Y’all might wonder why I’m finally “outing” myself as the male lead of a romance novel after this much time. Well, I’m doing it cause Trish has been a little under the weather here lately, and sometimes I think you need to acknowledge dear friends who’ve been kind to you. And in this case one who’s always been kind to me. Odds are that she’ll probably get a look at this article, and I sincerely hope that she realizes just how special she is, and why I’ll always think so fondly of her. She’s a great writer, and an even classier person. I could go on and write even more about her, but I’m scheduled for some plastic surgery in just a couple of days, so I’ve gotta start packing – after all, one never knows when they might meet the editor of Playgirl Magazine somewhere out there in the literary world…

A Free Way to Promote and Profit – Viral Marketing

January 10th, 2010

It’s a horrible word isn’t it….marketing? No, only joking, I mean “viral” of course. Mention viral and one tends to think infection, illness and disease – or for the geeks among us, computers messed up. But viral marketing is nothing so negative or unpleasant, viral marketing is good!

What is Viral Marketing?

As the name suggests, it’s a way of spreading your marketing message from person to person, rather like the flu virus is passed on. You give the germ to, say 5 friends/colleagues/family members, who in turn each pass on the bug to 5 more (5×5=25), who then spread it to another 5 (25×5=125) and so on until after just 8 levels, you reach the staggering figure of 1,953,125.

The classic example of viral marketing is Hotmail.com, one of the first free Web-based e-mail services. The strategy is simple:

1. Give away free e-mail addresses and services, 2. Attach a simple tag at the bottom of every users email message sent: “Get your private, free email at http://www.hotmail.com” and, 3. Then stand back while people e-mail to their own network of friends and associates, 4. Who see the message, 5. Sign up for their own free e-mail service, and then 6. Propel the message still wider to their own ever-increasing circles of friends and associates

What makes marketing ‘Viral’?

A viral marketing plan usually has some or all of the following basic elements:

1. Provides a product or service free
2. Makes for easy transfer of the message to others
3. Allows easy growth from small to very large
4. Exploits common motivations and behaviours
5. Uses existing communication networks
6. Utilizes the resources of others

Let’s look at each of these in turn.

1.Provides a product or service free

“Free” is the most persuasive word in marketing. Most viral marketing campaigns give away a product or service to get peoples interest. Free email service, free software, free information etc. Then, when you have their attention, when you have their trust, sell them something. Hit them with a sales pitch first, chances are they won’t be interested.

2. Makes for easy transfer of the message to others

Viral marketing works so well on the internet because quick communication has become so easy and cheap. Your marketing message must be simple so that it can be passed on without loosing its effectiveness. The simpler and shorter the better, remember the hotmail example: “Get your private, free email at http://www.hotmail.com.

3. Allows easy growth from small to very large

To grow rapidly, the necessary infrastructure must be available. The best viral marketing makes use of the resources of others. This was the only weakness in the hotmail example, the service required its own mailservers. Not a problem with the resources of Microsoft behind you, but for mere mortals like you and I, best to plan on spreading the message using others recourses, see number 6.

4. Exploits common motivations and behaviours

What motivates people to use certain products or services on the web, and to recommend these to their friends? The practicality of a product, sure, but more than that – the desire to be popular, thought of as cool etc. Greed also motivates, hence the power of the word ‘free’!

5. Uses existing communication networks

Most people have around 5 to 12 people in their close network of friends, family and work colleagues. On the internet, nearly everyone has email addresses in their contacts list, and favourite websites stored in their web browser. Utilise this fact in your marketing campaign. For example, when you give away a free product, ask the recipient to provide the email addresses of others who may be interested.

6. Utilizes the resources of others

Get your message into other peoples emails and onto others websites, that way their recourses are being used, not yours. And once your campaign has enough momentum, sit back while your customers do the marketing for you.

Conclusion

Viral marketing costs very little, in fact if you go to the right places it can be free. Given that, and the huge potential benefits, you marketing campaign really should catch the viral marketing bug!

Remembering TEOTWAWKI and Learning from It

January 6th, 2010

Its only been about 5 years since we had major scares in the marketplace regarding Y2K. You might recall that many computer systems were not programmed to be able to understand the change from 1999 to 2000. There was a tremendous amount of panic created by those who were convinced that as the clock hit midnight on on New Years Eve 2000 that we were going to enter the Dark Ages.

By my analysis this never occured….unless I slept through it and nobody bothered to wake me up! (Note to self: Make sure Staff wakes me up when Y2K occurs!)

The word we are supposed to learn from and understand is;
TEOTWAWKI….(The End Of The World As We Know It )
It was a word created by the Y2K scare.

I think there is a very profound lesson to be learned from the Y2K scare. That being that forecasting is pretty much worthless.
The real issue with trading as with life itself is to manage risk. Risk can be defined many ways but usually it involves not being prepared for the future and embracing an opinion.

The one advantage of living in a free society is that we are fortunate enough to be exposed to numerous viewpoints on a daily basis. As traders we must learn to constantly differentiate the difference between FACT and OPINION and determine how new data can affect us.

For those who never learn to do this, The End of The World As We Know It will reflect itself in their portfolios.
For the rest of us all we can learn to do is MANAGE RISK.
It is the only trading secret there is.

There are two schools of thought in trading….
TEOTWAWKI and Risk Management. You make the choice.

The only constant in life is change.
Don’t forecast. Manage your RISK.

Dowjonesfully,

Getting a lot of Website Traffic

January 5th, 2010

Anyone who owns a website knows the importance of website traffic. You may have a terrific idea for a website with an excellent product or service, superb design, content and functionality but if you do not use the right tactics, your site may not attract the all important highly targeted website traffic. Getting a lot of traffic into a site has very little to do with the site itself but with how the webmaster or site owner advertises it. With hundreds of competing sites, you must employ the most effective internet marketing techniques that will truly deliver results.

There are different internet marketing techniques that you can use. All these techniques and methods aim at increasing your website traffic. You must find a way for web surfers to find your site. To do this, you must put yourself in the shoes of your prospective visitors and future clients and see the internet through their eyes. Where do they usually go whenever they are looking up something on the web? The answer is the search engine; in fact, the two most popular websites on the web today are both search engines and portals. Thus, you should focus your internet marketing efforts on the search engine.

People will usually search for something using a search engine and click on the top results that these engines give. Therefore, you must use the right internet marketing techniques to get a high search engine ranking. To gain a high ranking in search results, you can use several internet marketing techniques. Search engine optimization is a set of methods that are aimed at improving the visibility of your site in search engine results. Since a search engine indexes sites by looking at its keyword density, your site’s content must have favorable keyword density that is search engine friendly. Content is one of the most important internet marketing technique itself. If you have excellent content that is geared towards achieving a high search engine ranking as well as provide information then you can expect a high search engine ranking. However, this is not as easy as it sounds. Countless other sites may be using the same internet marketing technique as you do. Thus, you must continuously find new ways of attracting more website traffic.

Aside from the traditional marketing techniques such as print ads, billboards, brochures, testimonials, flyers etc. you must use other more effective internet marketing techniques to gain more website traffic. One of the most popular internet marketing technique today is submitting articles. Writing and submitting articles is an extremely powerful method for promoting your websites, products, and services.

By writing short articles on the topic related to your website, you can offer these articles for other website owners or newsletter publishers to use by submitting them to an article directory.

These directories get spidered by the search engines on a regular basis because of the high value of the content they provide. If you have not yet been picked up by the search engines this is the easiest way to get them to find you. You also get exposure to those who look for articles in the directories for use on their sites.

When they make use of your articles on their websites or in their newsletters, you will get the credit as the author along with a link to your website. Not only will you gain visitors, but you will benefit from the hyperlinks that are created.

This internet marketing technique is now being used by thousands of site owners. It is also gaining popularity because of its relatively high success rate in attracting high website traffic.

A Fundamental Guide To Purchasing The Best Electrical Cookers

January 4th, 2010

Securing a gas powered cooker or an electric powered cooker can sometimes be an intimidating prospect, as the prices in general begin from a low price of around £300 to the top ranging items which can end up costing appreciably more than three-thousand pounds. The diverse range of options available in the wide price bracket are numerous and normally difficult to differentiate.

Nevertheless, as soon as you have done away with gas powered cookers as a possibility then there are several crucial points to research that should help you narrow down your options from hundreds and thousands of styles of electric powered cookers down to just 4 or possibly 5 cookers.

Essential Qualities to Consider: Straight away, your foremost consideration should realistically be whether you find it necessary to opt for a stand alone or an integrated cooker. The slot-in cooker does not need enclosing: furthermore a cooker that has just a single oven on the whole fits in a 60 cm cubic space (sixty centimetres high, by sixty centimetres wide, by sixty centimetres deep). You can also select a double oven that can fit within an area of similar width and depth as a singular oven, but is ninety centimetres tall.

If you are putting the cooker into a brand new or restored kitchen, side-by-side ovens are a very popular preference.

This means that you must pick among electric operated cookers that come with single or dual ovens. With dual ovens you can warm two pieces of food at totally different levels of heat; alternatively you can use one of the ovens as a broiler or warmer.

Other critical points to consider consist of whether you have a preference for electronic or manual controls, a self-cleaning oven (a common feature). or, even better, an electric oven with a pyrolytic cleaning module. Such units which clean the full interior are seen in the more expensive brands.

You will also need to consider your new cooker’s exhaust system, whether it will be built-in or “chimney” style.

Electric Cooker Installation: A trained sales person should be able to aid you through the choices identified above, and also assist you in determining if your electricity supply is adequate for the precise make of electric cooker you are getting. Most electric cookers require a 30 or forty-five amp power voltage, with a 13 amp fuse connection. Electric powered cookers don’t often come with cables included; even so, it is strongly recommended that you find an experienced engineer for the installation. The engineer will then ensure that you have the apt electricity supply & connection.

Gas cookers & electrical cookers both have their individual advantages, and among cookers electric operated products are on average the most appropriate choice to purchase. Discover a huge collection of electrical products such as; electric cookers, ovens and wall mounted gas fires from leading brands online.

When Online Videos Attack

January 2nd, 2010

With recent services like YouTube.com and Google Videos, having videos on your website is all the rage. People can put videos on their website without having the videos actually take up room on their own server. And YouTube.com and Google Videos make it fairly simple, if you know any HTML at all, to copy and paste a little bit of code onto your site.

But the power to easily put such videos of your site does not mean it’s always appropriate to do so. Let’s look at a case where it is appropriate, then a case where it isn’t appropriate.

Scott Ginsberg wears a nametag 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. He is the world’s foremost expert on approachability. He is also an international public speaker. Now on any website, you want to show off your product. As one of Scott’s biggest areas of his business is his public speaking, it only makes sense that he has a couple of videos on his site. He has one that is accessible from his main menu on every page, and another that is a bit more buried in his site.

For Scott’s type of work, having a couple of videos on his site makes sense. Note that he does not go overboard on the videos. The quality of the videos is professional, and does not detract from his site. Also, he is the subject of the videos. Seeing Scott makes his seem more approachable. Before you even meet him, you can hear him talk and interact with other people.

Let’s talk about a web designer’s site. I’m not going to bash any of my fellow designers by talking about a specific site, rather I will generically discuss a sample case.

There is really no reason for any videos to be on a web designer’s site. Their site is there to provide information about that web designer, including portfolio, client feedback and services offered. The only thing in there that could really even potentially be done with a video is client feedback. But doing so is unnecessary and would be tacky.

Why would it be tacky? Good taste on a web designer’s website is more important than it is on other sites. Video testimonials, while possibly appropriate imbedded within a longer video, are overkill on a web design site. Simple written testimonials will work much better in our case here, and would be much more tasteful.

So how do you determine if videos will work for your specific site? First off, look at other sites in your industry/niche. If many or most of them do have videos, chances are that a few will be fine. Don’t go overboard, and look at the kind of videos that are provided on those other sites.

Of course, just because no one in your industry has put a video on their site does not mean it is a bad idea. You may be the trend setter. If so, make sure you have some sort of method for tracking how many times the video is watched versus how many people visit your website. If hardly anyone ends up watching it, you may need to go ahead and take it down.

But if the ratio is much better, than you may have just started a trend. It may be a great idea to have videos on your site.

One final note. Videos in blogs tend to be more acceptable and appropriate than other places. Just make sure that the videos are appropriate for your intended audience. There’s no need to put a video of a kid falling off a skateboard on your business site (I’m sure it’s happened). Instead, put videos that instruct and will benefit your blog’s readers. If your blog is of a somewhat humorous tone, an occasional funny video won’t hurt.
